On the 14th of March, the European Parliament approved its position on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), with 343 votes in favor, 216 against, and 78 abstentions.
Energy poverty affects about 54 million people or 11% of the EU's population. Seven out of ten buildings in the EU are energy inefficient and the number of people at risk of energy poverty is on the rise.
In Europe, seven out of ten buildings are inefficient in terms of energy use and account for 36% of its greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of its energy use, but renovation rates are far below what is required to help the continent meet its climate goals.
We cannot allow this situation to continue. Now is the time to make Europe’s buildings more efficient!
The EPBD is not only about shaping buildings, but also about shaping the planet we live on and leaving it in a fit and healthy state, said Ciaran Cuffe (MEP Greens/EFA), and what’s more, the EPBD will create hundreds of thousands of good qualities, local jobs and help reach the EU climate targets.
Next step: Trilogue negotiations
e-SAFE aims to contribute to the deep renovation of the EU building stock by developing innovative technologies and solutions that combine decarbonization goals with earthquake resilience while reducing the time and costs of renovations.
We will closely follow the future negotiation!
