The European Commission published the new European Research Area (ERA) roadmap, outlining the main circular technologies and innovation needs for the textile, construction and energy-intensive sectors.
The goal is to use these technologies as much as possible, in order to achieve the EU's 2050 climate neutrality target. Also, the document shows how the European Union is a global leader in terms of active companies in circular technology research.
Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Education, Culture and Youth, underlined the necessity to see the circular economy as the only way forward. Investments in circular technologies will enable European companies to remain competitive and at the same time sustainable.
To achieve these goals, it is important to adopt a systemic approach, addressing the entire pathway of materials production and use, including the recycling phase.
Throughout this process, the Green Deal plays a key role. Indeed, the need for circular technologies and models has also grown with the introduction of new legislation, increasingly comprehensive and concerning the whole life of materials.
